The Magic of Repetition: Transform Your Dreams into Reality
How to Harness the Power of Repetition to Create the Life You Want
Have you ever wondered how some people seem to effortlessly achieve their goals and live the life of their dreams? The secret often lies in the simple yet powerful concept of repetition. In today’s newsletter, we’ll explore how the power of repetition can help you shape your thoughts, moods, and actions to create the life you desire and live your LifeVision. By understanding and applying this simple yet powerful concept, you can build positive habits, change your mindset, and achieve your goals.
Imagine for a moment you could have any kind of lifestyle you want. Would you choose the lifestyle of the rich and famous? Or perhaps the rich and unknown? Would you prefer to travel the world or settle into a peaceful country manor? Regardless of the type of lifestyle you desire, you can achieve it.
But before we dive in further, I want you to indulge in a magical fantasy. Pretending for a minute that you found a magic wand and could use it to make all your wishes come true, which includes your preferred lifestyle, encompassed within your chosen lifestyle, what all would you wish for? A happy, healthy family, more free time, more joy, less fat, less stress, less work, a labor of love? Take a few minutes and think of the things you want now.
These are your dreams, and whatever it is you fervently desire, most likely you can have it. But not by accident and not by luck. But with repetition.
Now let’s explore how harnessing the POWER of REPETITION can help you make it happen.
Everything is Repetition
Repetition has produced everything, and everything is repetition. The Universe is repetition. The World is repetition. You are. I am. It’s repetition of the hammer that builds the building. It’s repetition of the jackhammer and wrecking ball that tear down the building. It rings the school bell. It digs the ditch, plows the farm field, plants the corn, and harvests the corn. Of chewing, eats the corn. By repetition there’s walking, talking, and swimming. By repetition of over-eating, we gain weight; and exercising—build muscle and lose weight. Sand is created by repetition of the ocean waves. It’s the repetition of fuel explosions that powers our cars. And by repetition of nuclear reaction, the sun sends waves of heat and light and life. Yes, by repetition we live!
How Repetition Shapes Our Thoughts, Moods, and Actions
Think about how you learned to tie your shoes or ride a bike. You did it over and over until it became second nature. That’s the power of repetition, and it doesn’t just apply to physical skills. It can shape our thoughts, moods, and actions too.
Repetition Builds Habits
Imagine your brain as a path in the woods. The more you walk the same path, the clearer and easier it becomes to walk. Repetition works like that. When you do something repeatedly, it creates a well-worn path in your brain, turning actions into habits. For example, if you start exercising every morning, it might be tough at first, but over time, your brain gets used to it, and it becomes a habit.
Changing Your Thoughts
Ever notice how repeating something to yourself can change how you feel? If you keep telling yourself, “I can do this,” it starts to sink in. This is because repeated thoughts strengthen certain neural connections in your brain. So, if you constantly think positive thoughts, you start to believe them and feel more confident. On the flip side, negative self-talk can make you doubt yourself more.
Emotion Management
Your mood can be influenced by what you do repeatedly. Think of gratitude practices. If every day you take a moment to think about what you’re grateful for, it can make you feel happier over time. It’s like training your brain to focus on the positive. Similarly, if you regularly practice relaxation techniques, like deep breathing or meditation, you can teach your body to stay calm in stressful situations.
Guiding Your Actions
Repetition helps you get better at things. When you practice a skill, like playing the guitar or cooking, you improve through repetition. The same goes for behaviors. If you regularly practice patience, for instance, you become a more patient person. Your brain and body get used to these repeated actions, making them easier and more natural.
Repetition of Thought Conditions and Controls Our Behavior
Repetition conditions and controls our moods and actions. Here’s an illustration to further the point.
Negative Mental Movies
Have you ever become upset by something someone does or says and then allowed it to distract you from your plans, upset your mood, or ruin your day? “But, you protest; ‘he stepped on my toe,’ ‘Gave me the sign,’ ‘Cut me off in traffic,’ ‘He kicked my cat!’”
Then you repetitively run this movie over and over until it literally ruins your day. Over and over, you dwell on it with seething anger building up inside of you. You go home that night and play it over and over again, on and on. Why, you’d think it was the best picture in town. Then you’re lying in bed at night, and you even invent a sequel! It’s the revenge sequel: “I’m going to get even. He kicked my cat; I’m going to kick his cat.”
It’s crazy! But you can use it to your benefit by realizing that you’re in charge. You’re the projectionist; you get to select the movie. So why not the next time it happens, and from here on out, instead of running the lousy negative mental movie all day, play a movie you’ll enjoy. When you catch yourself repetitively playing a negative movie, why not switch it to a positive movie?
Positive Movies
This little trick can not only save your day but propel you in the direction of your ideal lifestyle: Create your very own happy movie. Here’s how: see in your mind’s eye a mental movie of you doing what you really enjoy doing and being with who you love being with. See yourself in your idyllic lifestyle doing what you love and being with who you love. Keep playing this movie and condense it to a 1–2-minute script. This movie, when played in your vision, should make you happy. This is your Happy Movie.
Now, make a second 1–2-minute movie outlining your most ardent desire. This will be your Achievement Movie. Make it the theme of your most ardent long-range goal, something you want to accomplish or attain in the next three to five years. You can increase its power by shrinking it down to 1-2-minutes in length—making it the last scene of the last act—the scene that most exemplifies what you want. It’s you on the trip, with your family, in your home, winning a contest, achieving your goal, an emotional visual that shows you getting what you want, and living your dream. This is your Achievement Movie.
Combine Repetition with Positive Movies to Be Happy and Live Progressively/Successfully. To assist you in attaining your desires, run your achievement movie two to three times per day. It only takes 1-2 minutes each time. This will keep you focused, on-track and motivated. And be sure to run your positive movies when you are emotionally down, sad, mad, or find yourself running negative movies, etc. By doing so, you can control your conditioning and thereby your mood. And in this way, you can control your actions and thereby your destiny—all by taking control of the repetition in your life!
